A Message from Michael Earp: Q-Lit's Chair and Co-Programmer
If you’d asked me, ‘What fills your cup?’ at almost any point in my career, I would've likely said: hanging out with friendly, interesting people; talking about books and writing; all mixed with a strong dash of queerness. Discovering ways of being that are entirely new to me, glimpsing myself in someone else’s words, or getting swept up in an incredible story are what bring me back to the page over and over. So, to now have programmed a monumental, week-long festival of queer writers with the help of Timothy and the Q-Lit team is a dream come true.
We love to center queer voices as a way to lift each other up, celebrate and platform community, and invite everyone to share in our joy. No matter what stage of your writing journey you’re on, no matter how many books you read a year, or if you consume your stories and words through other means, there’s always a seat at our table. Will you join us?
A Message from Timothy Ryan: Q-Lit's Creative Director and Co-Programmer
This year’s program is bursting with queer brilliance - storytelling in all its forms, from poetry and memoir to drag, comedy, song, and academic insights. I'm so proud that we’re giving space for over 60 LGBTQIA+ writers to share their words with the world.
At its heart, Q-Lit is about connection. Our community is bold, messy, joyful and evolving, and every generation has a different story to tell. I hope you leave having laughed, cried, and maybe made a new friend or two (especially at the closing party).
Big thanks to City of Melbourne, DFFH, and Kate Hall, who lit the first spark for Q-Lit back in 2021.
When I was 16, reading my first book with a gay character changed my life. I hope something here changes yours too.
